It seems impossible for Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson to deliver a hit during a NHL playoff game without spawning a social media debate about its legality.
During Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals vs. the Hurricanes, Wilson delivered a hit to Carolina’s Greg McKegg that shook him up.
Wilson was not penalized, but that didn’t stop fans from debating whether it was inadvertent elbowing or malicious. The elbow does come up late in the hit, but the check doesn’t resemble the kind of hits that previously caused him to receive multiple suspensions.
We will let you decide whether it more than a regulation hit:
Before this season, Wilson was suspended 20 games (reduced to 14 by an arbitrator) for a preseason hit against St. Louis forward Oskar Sundqvist. Because Wilson is important to Washington’s offense, he has tried to play less reckless this season.
