Bob Knight is back on Indiana University’s campus for the first time in more than 18 years.
He was seen riding on a golf cart before IU baseball’s doubleheader against Penn State Saturday afternoon.
Knight’s last public appearance on Indiana’s campus was when he gave a 20-minute farewell speech on Sept. 14, 2000. He declined to attend the 40th anniversary of the undefeated 1976 basketball team in 2015.
Regarding’s Knight’s appearance on campus, Indiana University athletic director Fred Glass told the Bloomington Herald-Times in a text message: “My understanding is that Coach Knight was in town for other reasons. He expressed interest in coming to a baseball game and obviously we were happy to facilitate that. I haven’t talked to him and don’t expect to.”
Knight, 78, was at Center Grove High School Thursday night for a speaking appearance with friend and former Bloomington Herald-Times editor Bob Hammel. While Knight’s fiery attitude and wit showed itself, so did multiple memory lapses.
“It was sad to watch,” attendee Brett Cripe told the Star. “To see someone who was once so vibrant and with it this way.”
