NEW YORK — No. 2-seeded Caroline Wozniacki is out of the US Open.
Wozniacki, who won the Australian Open in January, lost Thursday night to Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-4, 6-2 in a second-round match.
Wozniacki follows top-seeded Simona Halep, who lost to Kaia Kanepi in the first round, out the Open door.
Wozniacki started fast, breaking Tsurenko in her first service game and leading 3-1 before Tsurenko rallied.
In a grinding match, riddled with unforced errors, the 36-year-old Tsurenko won most of the rallies that went past nine shots — usually Wozniacki’s strong suit.
Wozniacki had trouble finding the range on her groundstrokes throughout the match, tallying six winners against 35 unforced errors.
It was Tsurenko’s first win against a top-five player. She will face Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the third round.
